As an English major with a concentration in creative writing, I need to write regularly to hone and maintain my skills. Along with taking classes, I try to set aside at least an hour every night to just write what comes to my mind. I don't worry too much about the quality of this writing, as I will revise it later. I've found that books written by other writers are very helpful for coming up with ideas on how to improve my writing, and I will often complete exercises that they recommend.
Reading is also key to being a good writer, so I'm always trying to keep up with the latest literary trends by checking out the works of other authors. I typically dedicate thirty minutes to an hour a day to simply reading for enjoyment. A routine is very important for writers, and each writer needs to figure out what is personally beneficial.
